Survivor Poem: Daybreak

Daybreak

By: LaRenda

The dawn comes soon

the craziness starts early

the petals bloom

the dew runs off

the questions flood my mind

“why me”

“why now”

the answers swirl like toxic covered candy

never coming into focus

“you’re a bad girl”

“you’ll die tonight”

wipe your mouth off your face

seal your mind with turpentine

ignore what’s coming

forget what will happen

find a vacant space to live in

leave your body behind

it’s not happening

you’re not there

run into the light

as your innocence falls into darkness.

LaRenda, thank you for sharing this powerful, beautifully written piece of poetry with the community on SoulSpeakOut. Your use of powerful words and imagery bring your experience to life and will allow other survivors to identify with what you’ve experienced. You write “The questions flood my mind/ “why me”/“why now”/the answers swirl like toxic covered candy/never coming into focus/“you’re a bad girl”/“you’ll die tonight”. This question of “why me” is one that many survivors struggle with, but that does not make it any less real or difficult for you to have to struggle with. Just remember that nothing you experienced was your fault- you did not ask to be violated and you did not deserve it. Thank you for your strength.
